Reading
We will start off the year reading and studying about horses. Students in reading groups will get the opportunity to read books about horses at their level. Many of these books will be fictional, but students will also get the opportunity to read non-fiction books.
Every day in 3rd grade I read aloud to students. These chapter books coincide with our reading and social studies units. While reading, I model fluency, expression, and tone. After finishing a book, I post the title in my room and students vote on their favorite. In the past years, we have finished 14-15 books.
Each week students will be required to earn 1 AR (accelerated reader) point. I will assign students their book levels at the beginning of the year. These levels will increase as the year goes on. Students will have approximately 25 minutes of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time a day. Students will also be expected to read at home.
